Colombia, well known as the country with the largest number of ecosystems in the world is, at the same time, a tropical country with many different climates. What’s the secret behind the unique weather in Colombia? Let’s dive deeper and discover the amazing landscapes and biodiversity coursing throughout the country.
CUERPO DEL CONTENIDO
For starters, the secret of the climate in Colombia lies in its geography. The country is surrounded by three huge mountains, which split it into five natural regions: Andes, Pacific, Caribbean, Amazon and the Llanos (plains). All of this offers an impressive range of climates and landscapes at different altitudes.
How can a tropical country have so many different climates? Weather in Colombia can change from warm to extremely cold because of its thermal floors. What are thermal floors, you may ask? Thermal floors are a measurement system that defines the temperature of an area according to the height above the sea level at which it is located. Actually, geography is the factor that most modifies the climate in Colombia.
Basically, there are four types of thermal floors in Colombia: warm, temperate, cold and snow. These define the weather in Bogota, the weather in Medellin, the weather in Cartagena, the weather in Cali and the Santa Marta Colombia weather. Now, let’s discover the differences between each thermal floor.
Colombia is a generally warm country, almost 80% of its territory lies below 1,000 m above sea level in a wide variety of Colombian regions, with an average temperature of 27 degrees (C).
In Cartagena de Indias, “The Heroic City”, one of Colombia’s crown jewels, guarded by 13 km of stone walls and precious colonial-style houses you will feel the tropical heat of the country. This can also be experienced in Colombian Caribbean cities such as Santa Marta, San Andrés, Barranquilla, similarly to Cali and Bucaramanga.
The temperature begins to drop at 1,000 m above sea level to an average of 22 degrees (C). In the main cities with this type of weather in Colombia, beautiful flowers bloom and the best coffee grows every day of the year.
This is especially true of Caño Cristales in La Macarena, a surreal landscape where the rainbow flows. The five-colored river changes its hues throughout the year, an amazing natural showcase you should experience in Colombia. Other must-see destinations include Medellín and the coffee cultural landscape in Colombia.
Above 2,000 m above sea level, the weather becomes cold and is often rainy, as if in a state of perpetual autumn, with an average temperature of 14 degrees (C). Take Bogota, Colombia’s capital city, as a example a city that welcomes people from all around the country and exhibits cold weather every day.
At the height of the Andean Range, over 4,500 m above sea level., majestic peaks rise high enough above the country’s tropical heat to be perpetually covered in snow. Colombia has six snow-capped mountains, three of which are volcanoes. These includes the nevados of Santa Isabel, Tolima, Ruiz, Huila, Cocuy and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
The year round climate in Colombia never changes, isn’t it amazing? Unlike almost every other country in the world, Colombia only has just dry seasons (from December to January and July to August) and rainy seasons (from April to May and October to November).
Varying elevations determine the weather in Colombia, as well as Colombia’s biodiversity. As a foreign visitor, will be able to enjoy humpback whale sightings in Colombia, discover amazing places to go birdwatching and unwind on incredible beaches. Additionally, you could visit glacier regions, go inside the tropical rainforest of the Amazon or visit moorlands, such as the Chingaza National Natural Park.
