Mompox: A Town Embedded In Mystery And History

Mompox, founded on May 3, 1537, was recognized by UNESCO on the World Heritage List for its beauty and historical value.

Surrounded by the Magdalena River and known as the largest river island in Latin America, Santa Cruz de Mompox holds a unique cultural treasure in its streets, recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1995.

Founded on May 3, 1537, by Alonso de Heredia, Mompox is named after Chief Mompoj, leader of the tribes who lived in the region. The site of the municipality was the former home of the Malibú people.

This mysterious place, nestled in Bolívar, transports visitors to another dimension with its street design and high-arched houses, designed to combat the heat. During the conquest, Mompox was an important trade link between Cartagena and the interior. Its beautiful architecture makes Mompox a venue for cultural events such as the Independent Film, Jazz, and Music Festivals in Mompox. The town is also famous for its religious tourism during Holy Week.

The main architectural attraction of Mompox is the Church of Santa Bárbara, built in 1630, with a baroque tower that recreates the legend of the “saint”. Another popular site is the Municipal Cemetery, which houses the tomb of Candelario Obeso, a pioneer of Black poetry. Other attractions include the Municipal Palace, the Museum of Religious Art, the Church and Convent of San Francisco, the House of the Marquesa's Arcades, San Juan de Dios, San Agustín, and the Immaculate Conception. Many tourists come to buy filigree crafts made with the goldsmith technique.
