This film is a Colombian production directed and starring actress Flora Martínez. The plot follows the life of a deaf-mute cacao grower who, surprisingly, begins to hear a peculiar music that always comes from the same cardinal direction. Itzia, the protagonist, is convinced that these melodies are not a figment of her imagination and, to prove it, sets out on a journey in search of the source of the music, which will lead her to discover its origin.
Itzia, Tango Cacao, filmed in Colombia between Zipaquirá and San Vicente de Chucurí, not only immerses the viewer in magical realism, but also highlights the more than 500,000 people with hearing disabilities in the country and shows how cacao has allowed many Colombian families to transform their lands, promoting cultivation and the development of a culture around it. In addition, it conveys a message of hope, showing that in the Colombian countryside there are alternatives for peace-building.
Released at the end of October 2023, the film was honored at the European Cinematography Awards with “Best Actress” and “Best Picture.” It was also selected to participate in prestigious international festivals in countries such as Japan, India, the United States, and Canada. Itzia, Tango Cacao premiered in Colombian movie theaters on October 26, 2023, and became the most important national film of the year among the 68 released, remaining in theaters for more than eight weeks. It also participated in more than twenty international festivals, receiving awards in Greece, the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and France.
This moving story reflects the best of Colombia, featuring authentic characters and plots focused on family ties, love, and a deeply artistic aesthetic, with a touch of magical realism. Itzia, Tango Cacao is an example that in Colombia it is possible to create different cinema, with narratives that go beyond the conventional, offering stories that celebrate the resilience and hard work of those who wish to cultivate a better future.
Starring Elizabeth Martínez and Antonio Jiménez, two talented actors from Cartagena, and the bullerengue singer Pabla Flórez, La Suprema has become one of the most outstanding Colombian cinema productions in 2024, bringing the essence of our cinematography to many corners of the world. The film tells the story of Laureana, a teenager living in La Suprema, a town in the Gran Caribe Colombiano, who dreams of becoming a boxer.
Filmed in the hamlet of the same name, located in the municipality of Matuya, in María la Baja (Bolívar), the movie involved the local community. Many residents of the area participated directly in the production by working as actors and extras in the wardrobe, makeup, and art departments, among others.
La Suprema is part of the national lineup and was officially selected for FICCI 2024 (Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartagena de Indias). It has also received various international recognitions in prestigious festivals, including its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, its inclusion in the official selection of the Warsaw Festival (Poland), the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, the Fribourg International Film Festival in Switzerland—where it received the Ecumenical Jury Prize—and the Havana Film Festival, where it won the Coral Award for Postproduction.
