Estudio Marañacos made a great contribution to the list of national exporters. This year it sent two seasons of its children's animated series ‘Juani y Gatón’ to China.
Colombia is a country of nuances—indecipherable due to its diversity and difficult to describe with just a few adjectives. This has had a profound impact on national productivity, where not only agricultural or industrial products are developed. Colombians who have turned their ideas and culture into works for consumption and posterity hold a privileged place. Gabriel García Márquez, for example, was one of those Colombians who made creativity his life project. It was enough for him to tell the world, among other things, that even blindfolded, he always knew whether or not he was in the Colombian Caribbean.
Colombia has taken on an orange hue, the color commonly associated with culture, identity, and creativity. It’s not just the streets and people of Macondo that evoke national stories. Juanes, Shakira, Ruven Afanador, Fernando Montaño, Fernando Botero, and Esteban Cortázar, for example, along with countless personalities and companies, form a list of Colombians who have exported their talent and creativity. Their work is a tribute to the country’s cultural wealth and diversity. Now, joining them is Estudio Marañacos, creator of a fun and entertaining children’s series in demand abroad.
Little Juani set off on a journey to China, accompanied by her grandfather and Gatón. But this time, it's not just another adventure in a new episode of the famous animated series. We're talking about the export of the first two seasons of this audiovisual production to the Chinese market, thanks to the Colombian company Estudio Marañacos. Their adventure stories for children were translated into Mandarin and are now being distributed in Asia. A dash of Colombian fun and entertainment on the other side of the world.
The grandfather regularly shows Juani, his granddaughter, a photo album full of stories and memories from his time as a photographer. Unfortunately, some pictures are missing, and he finds it impossible to remember how those stories ended. Driven by curiosity, Juani embarks on fascinating journeys, piloting her living room couch and accompanied by her inseparable friend Gatón, a blanket brought to life by imagination. After overcoming obstacles and completing each adventure, Juani and Gatón always find the missing photograph and complete the grandfather's incredible stories. That’s how their days and adventures unfold.
Estudio Marañacos is an audiovisual production company, allied with the Colombian-Canadian company Kinematiko Media, dedicated to creating animated children’s content. In addition to winning several awards and recognitions, they participated in the Kidscreen Summit 2018. There, they showcased their work, born from the imagination of Colombian founders Anamaría Castiblanco and Julián Manrique, along with a talented team. During the event, they signed a deal with Panda Media Group to distribute the animated series Juani & Gatón in China.
Juani and Gatón is a co-production with Kinematiko Media and Señal Colombia. It joins the list of animated series aired on Iqiguo and TongYi, the two main video platforms in the People’s Republic of China. It’s also broadcast online in Hong Kong and on the Hami TV channel in Taiwan. Without a doubt, this Colombian animated series for children set a precedent in the national industry and audiovisual sector. A clear example of how to export talent and ideas.
Given its diversity and invaluable cultural richness, Colombia has immense productive potential in transforming talent and ideas into goods and services. Alongside coffee, flowers, and other exportable products, children’s cartoons are now marketed internationally. Estudio Marañacos proved that children’s series are a great business opportunity. There are over 60 companies in Colombia specializing in digital animation, mainly based in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, and Manizales. Their stories already have large audiences in countries like the United States, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Germany, and recently, China.
Alongside industrial and agricultural products, Colombia also exports ideas, talent, and services. Estudio Marañacos has joined the national export offering of artists, writers, advertisers, designers, musicians, singers, jewelers, photographers, and graphic animators, among others. The studio became part of Colombia’s exports to the Asian continent, bringing together talented scriptwriters, directors, artists, educators, and audiovisual producers to create their children’s series. A successful mix of fun stories, hilarious characters, and educational content.
