Named in honor of José María Córdova, a hero of the country, this is one of Colombia's great pantries. In addition to livestock, here, among crops of corn, yucca, bananas, cotton and other gifts of the land, stories are told to the rhythm of porro, bullerengue and vallenato; while looking out to the sea or the Sinú River from beautiful towns like San Bernardo del Viento and Santa Cruz de Lorica.
In this land full of beauty have been born characters of the stature of writer Manuel Zapata Olivella, singers Jorge Villamizar and Manuel Turizo, baseball player Jordan Diaz, soccer player Leicy Santos and boxers like Miguel “Happy” Lora and Mauricio Pastrana, just to mention some of the emblematic names. In addition, apart from boxing and baseball, the department hosts one of the flagship festivals of Colombian music: the San Pelayo Festival, or National Porro Festival.
