Land of the "Sombrero Vueltiao"
Named in honor of José María Córdova, a national hero, this department is one of Colombia's great agricultural hubs. In addition to livestock, here—among fields of corn, yuca, plantain, cotton, and other gifts of the land—stories are told to the rhythm of porro, bullerengue, and vallenato, while gazing at the sea or the Sinú River from beautiful towns like San Bernardo del Viento and Santa Cruz de Lorica.
In this land full of beauty, notable figures such as writer Manuel Zapata Olivella, singers Jorge Villamizar and Manuel Turizo, baseball player Jordan Díaz, soccer player Leicy Santos, and boxers like Miguel “Happy” Lora and Mauricio Pastrana have been born, just to name a few iconic names. Additionally, apart from boxing and baseball, the department is home to one of Colombia’s flagship music festivals: the San Pelayo Festival, also known as the National Porro Festival.
