The department is part of the Colombian Amazon-Orinoquia. The greenest region of the country, where rivers flow through the jungle and plains, also where communities and nature coexist in harmony. It is also divided into two territories that are home to natural scenery and ancestral cultures that are world heritage sites.
In the department there are approximately 26 indigenous ethnic groups with a population of 46,000 members. Of these, 14 families stand out: the Tukano, Arawak, Tikuna, Yagua, Yacuna, Uitoto, and Nukak. Many of them are found in the tri-border region of Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
