Three enterprising women who inspire all of Colombia

Every day, thousands of people build a country: they do it with their work, with their dreams, with the desire to improve. A fundamental part of this “entrepreneurial revolution” comes from our enterprising women...

In Colombia, we honor the contribution of women to the business ecosystem and recognize the challenges that remain in the pursuit of a more equitable world. Although in Colombia we work daily towards this goal, this day serves to remind us of this common cause and to celebrate the work of Colombian women: those who, despite adversity, have built their own business world.

Thousands of ventures, thousands of stories

Turbans made by Colombian women.

In Colombia, we believe in the work of women. Their effort has not only guaranteed thousands of jobs; it has also served as an inspiration to thousands who trust their work and expertise. According to data from the 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, our country ranks third worldwide in terms of the number of women-led ventures (17.9% are managed by women). We hold the same position in the IDB ranking for the best Latin American countries in legal and fiscal infrastructure for these types of ventures.

Beyond the “cold” statistics, we believe this day is an opportunity to recognize the best of Colombian women entrepreneurs. Those who, with grit, have risen against prejudice in the past and built a better future for others. Heirs to a cause that is not over but achieves greater triumphs every day, their accomplishments elevate our labor landscape looking forward.

We know that behind every company there is a story, a unique way of understanding people’s needs and offering a solution. This requires broad, empathetic knowledge that gives the best of itself for the benefit of others. Something we in Colombia do better than anyone.

But let’s not stop at these statements; rather, let’s get to know firsthand some stories of women entrepreneurs. Thanks to their work, we can say that Colombia is the most welcoming country.

Immersed in paradise: Beatriz and her dream

Beatriz Ossa, Book of Warmth.

The journey of Beatriz Ossa is endless. Almost daily, this Colombian explores the sea and its depths in search of secrets and adventures to discover. Naturally, Beatriz ingeniously combined her experience as a marine biologist and her passion for diving to bring sea lovers closer to the fantasy of inhabiting it for a moment.

In her venture, she guides people through a dream: to explore the most hidden parts of the Caribbean Sea’s surface and learn about the fauna and vegetation there. It’s no easy task, as not everyone, no matter how deeply they wish it, is prepared to dive into these places.

Faced with anxiety, Beatriz instills confidence in her “students”: she reminds them that nothing bad will happen, that everything will be fine after enough training. Only then does the adventure begin. The sea and its secrets are Beatriz’s daily joys.

If you want to know more about her and her story, feel free to check our Book of Warmth.

The Garden of Yubarta Winds: a paradise of native cuisine

Amelia Hurtado, Book of Warmth.

Amelia Hurtado knows that every great culinary story begins in the earth: she gives her best so that vegetables and fruits grow well. That’s where flavor starts, in caring for nature’s fruits, in their selection and good cultivation.

In the northern Colombian Pacific, under the shade of Nuquí’s palm trees, she has made Yubarta Winds a special hotel: an immersive experience in growing some of the delights of our native cuisine.

Because everything we do carries an unmatched passion, in Colombia a good table begins beyond spatulas and pots. Amelia knows this, which is why she shares a bit of who we are with all those who want to explore the secrets of our warmth.

Makena Travels: the joy of traveling through Colombia

Colombian woman entrepreneur, Ludy Valencia.

Ludy Valencia, a fellow native of Quibdó, knows that the best smile is forged after overcoming the storm. This lawyer and defender of individual and collective rights of the Chocó population found tourism as a way to extend her commitment to the city. At Makena Travels, Ludy and her team offer travelers a unique experience of the flavors, aromas, and landscapes of Chocó.

Naturally, this Quibdó native is clear that her land gathers the best of our country: incredible landscapes and people who will remain unforgettable to all who have the pleasure of meeting them. We know that Makena, a Kenyan word meaning “joy,” gives generously the best of who we are. Don’t hesitate to look them up! Joy will be your welcome letter to a land that offers its best in every gesture. These are just some stories proving that with effort and love for what we do, we can go far.

Behind each entrepreneurial woman in our country are a thousand stories; some joyful, others challenging, but what we are sure of is that their story embodies the best of us: tough people who, behind a smile, enjoy life and its adventures.

For their achievements and all they have done to raise awareness in our society about the gaps that persist regarding the value of women’s and men’s work, we proudly honor Entrepreneurial Women’s Day. Don’t forget that in our Book of Warmth you’ll find more stories about the joy of being Colombian and what we are capable of!
