Exploring the El Secreto Nature Reserve means immersing yourself in one of the most magical corners of Garagoa, Boyacá. Located in the village of Ciénega Valvanera, this reserve shelters mountain landscapes and rich biodiversity, both flora and fauna. Its ecological trails wind through native trees, ferns, and orchids, creating a perfect environment for those seeking a breath of nature. It is also home to emblematic species such as the cusumbo, the soche deer, the armadillo, and the majestic spectacled bear.

The reserve is a space dedicated to conservation, research, and environmental education. Here you will find an ideal environment for connecting with nature and activities designed to promote learning, respect for the environment, and sustainable development. Enjoy rural tourism in Colombia, research spaces, and guided tours.

In Garagoa, 235 bird species have been recorded, including endemic species such as the Yellow-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura calliptera) and the Black-and-chestnut Eagle (Spizaetus isidori). In October, you can see large flocks of Broad-winged Hawks flying across the skies of the municipality, American cuckoos in the wooded areas, sandpipers along the Garagoa River, or restless Northern warblers amidst the Boyacá landscape. It is truly a spectacle to watch these migratory species. In addition, around 200 bird species are residents and can be observed year-round in the municipality.

We recommend taking a birdwatching tour through the villages surrounding the municipal center, where you can record more than 40 species, and if the walk is near Cerro de Mamapacha, this richness can reach up to 70 species in one journey. Best of all, Garagoa offers birdwatching routes for all ages and physical conditions. You can also take mountain trails and passively observe birds from a balcony.

In the main square of Garagoa, Boyacá stands a monument dedicated to Mamapacha, the goddess of the earth according to local mythology. The legend says that during times of drought, Mamapacha demanded sacrifices to bring forth springs, giving rise to water sources such as the Laguna de Mundo Nuevo and the streams La Colorada and Quigua. Thanks to this legend, a monument was built, which not only decorates the square but also connects visitors with the town’s rich cultural heritage.

Visiting this place is discovering the ancestral spirituality of Garagoa. Through the story of Mamapacha, the inhabitants honor their bond with nature and the sacred forces that, according to tradition, have protected and nurtured their land for generations. These cultural expressions will enrich your visit to Garagoa, and you can also enjoy religious tourism, as the municipality has several parishes.
