The city is located in a valley that was part of the domains of the famous cacique of Upar, an iconic character of indigenous history, hence the name Valledupar. It is one of Colombia's main agro-industrial and mining centers.
Valledupar is also known for being the cradle of vallenato, a musical genre to which the performers of the Greater Colombian Caribbean deliver their best chords to the delight of the whole world. Let all those who enjoy the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata, the celebration for which accordions from all over Colombia are tuned, say so!
